At age 9, Glenn began losing his eye sight, and went blind at age 12. Family, friends, church, and community groups like the Lion’s Club came together to fund the multiple surgeries that ultimately saved his sight in one eye. This experience deepened his faith and inspired him to help others, just as he had been helped.
In 1958, 22 years-old Glenn decided to take his vacation time to travel from California back to his family home in Arkansas. There, he met 18-year-old Janice Tate, who had grown up just 200 yards from him. It was love at first sight! After a week of dating, Glenn proposed and the two were married.
Their early life in Southern California involved church planting, raising their boys, and Glenn's work at Fleetwood Doors and Windows. In 1965, they adopted two little girls from orphanages in Seoul, South Korea, a transformative experience that inspired their commitment to support vulnerable children throughout the world.
Janice passed away peacefully in 2024 surrounded by family, and Glenn currently resides in Yorba Linda, California. Today, their unwavering dedication to the Church of Christ community and charities they loved lives on through the McCoy Family Foundation.
Glenn McCoy was born in the Ozark mountains of Wesley, Arkansas. In 1940, his family moved to Fullerton, California to find work. When Glenn was nine, he began losing his eyesight. Family, friends, and community groups came together to cover the cost of his surgeries, an experience that instilled in him a life-long heart for service and generosity.
On a trip back to Arkansas, Glenn met Janice—it was love at first sight! The two were married four weeks later and welcomed their two sons within a few years. During this period, they helped plant a church in Fullerton, where Glenn preached for six years.
While volunteering at an orphanage in Seoul, South Korea, friends of the couple spoke of a little girl they fell in love with and hoped someone would adopt. The McCoys decided to adopt her, as well as another little girl, and travelled to Korea to meet them. Michele and Mara joined their family, followed by a third daughter a few years later—talk about a full house!
Over the following decades, Glenn and Janice channeled their success at Fleetwood Doors and Windows into charitable causes across the globe. Through their church, they helped establish mission works in places like Ghana. They also supported causes close to home like the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles.
Glenn and Janice founded the McCoy Family Foundation to ensure their family's value of generosity could live on for generations. Today, Michele's husband Mark chairs the Board of Directors, and their many children and grandchildren are actively involved in serving through the foundation.
Inspired by their Christian faith, Glenn and Janice shared their blessings with others and put the bulk of their wealth into the foundation to ensure that these causes continue to benefit from their generosity. Their faith continues to guide our work, so ethical conduct and fair treatment are essential to everything we do.
Glenn and Janice had big hearts, especially for those affected by poverty, inadequate healthcare, and other uncontrollable circumstances. We approach our work with genuine respect and concern for the lives of the most vulnerable. We are committed to creating a more loving and equitable world.
Glenn and Janice had limited educational opportunities and were committed to helping others obtain a high-quality education. We believe that quality education opens doors to opportunity and helps bring solutions to complex challenges. Sustainable, long-term solutions to societal problems require comprehensive and multi-disciplined approaches. We value evidence-based strategies.
Glenn and Janice were frugal with their money and made wise investments. We maximize our resources in order to advance the mission with the goal of long-term sustainability for the programs we support. Initiatives that pursue preventative measures rather than the treatment of existing symptoms offer greater opportunities for long-term impact.
Glenn and Janice knew the importance of strong leadership. We value investing in ongoing leadership and staff development, recognizing the importance of continuous learning and growth. When working internationally and in other cultures, we value supporting local leadership and governing agencies, fostering collaboration and mutual understanding.
Glenn and Janice valued strong relationships with the people and organizations they supported. We believe that strong, collaborative relationships with grantees are central to effective philanthropy. We see our role as developing and proposing ideas, connecting people and organizations, and working together to advance the greater good.
